Dog Rescue & Adoption
Cavie’s Role in Dog Rescue
The story of Cavie, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in Cavie’s Magical Wish, touches on the challenges faced with dog rescue and adoption. The touching story shares when Cavie remembers his time trapped at a puppy mill and how grateful he was to have a family now.
Cavie’s past in a puppy mill shows the tough conditions many dogs face before being rescued. Cavie’s background helps set the stage for talking to kids and adults about how important it is to rescue and adopt animals from these places.
While the story of Cavie is fictional, it’s based on Author Julie Huetsch’s adoption of her dog, Granger, and other real-life examples of pups that have gone through similar challenges.
Granger’s Story
Author Julie Huetsch’s dog Granger has a touching rescue story which motivated her to write Cavie’s Magical Wish, the first book in her children’s book series, Cavie Tales™. Granger was saved from a puppy mill by The Cavalier Rescue and fostered by a wonderful foster mom (although she’s more like an angel!)
Granger was adopted into Julie’s family with a heart condition, hearing loss, and separation anxiety. He learned to adapt to his new home life by following the routine of his new dog sister, Kaylee, and with much love and support from Julie’s family. He continued to receive medical care, which The Cavalier Rescue had first started. Granger quickly adapted and now happily claims the title of king of their castle!
Julie believes in giving back; a portion of the proceeds from Cavie’s Magical Wish book sales support The Cavalier Rescue, which helps dogs needing rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming.
The Truth About Puppy Mills
10,000 Puppy mills are in the United States
Dogs are kept in puppy mills for breeding
Puppies are sold each year from puppy mills
Overcrowded and Unsanitary Conditions
In puppy mills, dogs are kept in overcrowded and dirty places, which can lead to health problems. They live in rows upon rows of stacked wire cages with little cleanliness and are often exposed to parasites and infectious diseases.
Lack of Veterinary Care
Dogs in puppy mills usually get very little veterinary care. This neglect can result in untreated injuries or illnesses, leading to severe health issues or even death. Common problems are skin conditions, dental disease, and eye disorders.
Behavioral and Psychological Issues
The lack of socialization and human contact in puppy mills can lead to difficult behavioral problems. Dogs may show fear, aggression, or anxiety as a result of their isolation and the stressful conditions in which they are raised.
Exploitation and Abuse
Breeding dogs in puppy mills are treated as products, especially the females, bred repeatedly, without concern for their health and well-being. Puppies are torn away far too soon. Once the breeding dogs can no longer reproduce, they may be abandoned, sold at auctions, or killed.
Rescue and Rehabilitation Challenges
Dogs rescued from puppy mills need physical and psychological help. They need extensive medical care and socialization to adapt to a normal life, which requires many resources and can be emotionally stressful for rescuers and adopters.
Remember, when looking for a furry friend – Choose Wisely!
By adopting from rescue groups and shelters, supporting reputable breeders, and spreading awareness, we can help put puppy mills out of business. Every dog deserves a life filled with love.
